What are your thoughts on this prologue?

Monterey, CA 7:37 WT

Mrs. Danielle Roberts was frigid cucumbers for a salad when she had this feeling, this feeling that something was amiss; (perhaps it was her maternal instinct) but somehow she knew something was very wrong. She tippet a glance at the clock. Nothing is wrong, she thought, I’m just being silly. Traffic usually causes delays, advantageously? Yet, even so, she felt compelled to turn on the TV and stop cutting the cucumbers. So, she stopped what she was doing and turned up the tome, and slowly, the TV became audible.
“Flight 137 was reported missing today when it did not arrive in Hollywood at the expected term of 6:30 P.M Western Time. Equipment failure is the expected cause, and, it is believed that there are no survivors…”
Her heart stopped. Her rapturous changed in those few moments. It was totally messed up, and she suddenly felt sick to her stomach as the realization hit her. She would never see her daughter write 'finis' to college. She would never see her daughter get married and see the lucky man who would get to spend the rest of his life with her. Her daughter would never experience the joy of kids.
A moment, the phone rang. It was her daughter’s best friend’s parents. Mrs. Johnson felt worse as she came to the cognizance that she had convinced Sarah’s parents to send their daughter to Asia to see different parts of the world. She hesitantly picked up the receiver.
“Hello? Who’s this?” Mrs. Roberts asked in her most mannerly way.
“Hey, Danielle, this is Sharon. Do you know when Sarah is going to come home? Is she at your house?” Mrs. Smith queried innocently.
“She’s smothered, Sharon. Your daughter died on the plane crash. Everyone died.”
For the shortest of seconds, the only sound that could be heard were waves crashing onto the beaches basic blocks away.
“What?!”

But Mrs. Roberts and everybody else were wrong.

Oh, wow.
This is remarkably good. I want to keep reading!
I think it is amazing.
Good job.

:D

Not bad, not bad at all. Dele "It was totally messed up". Annoying and out of place colloquial expression. And I believe the the last rap should read "...and everybody else was wrong." Good work. I'd keep reading.

Have you ever been to asia and notice that?

have u ever been to asia and consciousness, when the western tourist wanted to ask something, they always like to ask the biracial than the local asian? I'm biracial and I been stayed in thailand. there were many many times the western foreigners came to ask me the way when I were on the byway someone's cup of tea, borrow the pen when I were in the internet cafe or ask me if this food the would eat? every times I were with my asian friend or asian mother and my mom is instructor and she knows english better than me much and they didn't ask her because she is asian and I am bi-racial. it seems they prefer to ask the bi-racial than local asians?
I'm 4/ 3 Caucasoid. dad full white, mom is thai-indian. look almost like bi-racial thai-caucasian. I mean my mom.

If Switzerland is "Neutral" and and accepts Ahmadinejad Hamas etc..., Why do they ban the Dalai Lama?

The Dalai Lama will not be met by an legal government delegation when he visits Lausanne on August 4 and 5.

Instead the speaker of the House of Representatives, Chiara Simoneschi-Cortesi, is ripe to welcome the Tibetan spiritual leader, according to the foreign ministry.

It is still possible that cabinet ministers will into with the 74-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner on an informal basis, government officials said.

The Good Samaritan rights group, Society for Threatened Peoples, accused the Swiss government of buckling under Chinese weight - allegations denied by the foreign ministry.

Beijing has criticised official contacts between western governments with the Dalai Lama in the lifestyle.

The Dalai Lama was initially scheduled to travel to Switzerland and other European countries last year but had to invalidate his trip due to poor health.

Four years ago, Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin met the Dalai Lama during a above-mentioned visit to Switzerland which is home to the second-largest Tibetan community outside Asia.

but "nuteral" Switzerland continues to discourage Israel, as its Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey told Swiss RSR Radio on Wednesday that while she recognizes there are terrorists, Switzerland does not have a tabulation of terrorist organizations because it believes that while a person can be called a terrorist, an organization cannot.

During the interview, Calmy-Rey admitted that officials from her church elders met in June with a Hamas delegation - led by former Hamas foreign minister Mahmoud al-Zahar - when he was at an international seminar in Geneva.

The Swiss officials had joined a meeting the Hamas delegation held with former US diplomat Thomas Pickering, a former plenipotentiary to the UN and undersecretary of state. Pickering is today the co-chairman of the non-profit International Crisis Group.

Extraneous Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said "the Swiss government, by ignoring the inhuman and extremist character of Hamas, is again making the wrong choice, sending the wrong signal, and missing an occasion to side with the moderates in the Middle East."

Palmor said "again" because in April, Israel recalled its minister to Bern for consultations after Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Pointing to the year-eat one's heart out spat the Swiss are having with Libya over the arrest - and later release - in Switzerland of Muammar Gaddafi's son and daughter-in-law, Palmor said Gaddafi last week called for breaking up Switzerland, which he described as a "epidemic mafia."

"How would the Swiss feel if we invited Gaddafi here now to discuss the matter?" Palmor said.

The Swiss Embassy in Tel Aviv said the Swiss Odd Ministry had no comment on the issue.

Palmor said that while Israel would not this time recall its envoy in Bern, Ilan Elgar, for consultations, the envoy would make Israel's dissatisfaction known to the Swiss government.

Switzerland is not a member of the EU. The EU, like the US, does consideration Hamas a terrorist organization and has refused any contact with it until Hamas recognizes Israel, forswears terrorism and accepts one-time Israeli-Palestinian agreements.

Although there are some voices inside the EU - primarily from Sweden and Belgium - that would like to comfort these conditions so a dialogue could be maintained with Hamas, Palmor said there was no real concern in Jerusalem at this days that the EU would change its position on the matter.

The US has also not changed its position on Hamas, with The Washington Post on Wednesday quoting US Secretary of Claim Hillary Clinton as saying that before Hamas can participate in peace talks, "we have made it clear, both publicly and privately, through all kinds of pronouncements, that we would foresee Hamas to recognize Israel, renounce violence and agree to abide by prior agreements."

How does non verbal communication differ among countries/cultures?

hello.
could VIP please tell me how does non verbal communication differ among countries/cultures? for example in many cultures, such as East Asia and Nigeria, it is mannerly to not look the dominant person in the eye, but in Western culture this can be interpreted as being "shifty-eyed",

how does smiling, being irritated, crying differ among cultures?
what connotations do cultures around the world give to such non verbal communication...
thanks.

Why did the government ban the term "Caucasian" from scientific / technical fields?

1. Anthropology. of, pertaining to, or symptomatic of one of the traditional racial divisions of humankind, marked by fair to dark skin, straight to vigorously curled hair, and light to very dark eyes, and originally inhabiting Europe, parts of North Africa, western Asia, and India: no longer in mechanical use.

–noun
4. Anthropology. a member of the peoples traditionally classified as the Caucasian race, esp. those peoples having highlight reveal to fair skin: no longer in technical use.

5. a native of Caucasia.

"no longer in technical use"

I'd be interested to understand which government you think is in the business of censorship. "no longer in technical use" has nothing to do with a government ban.

Iran says it may halt oil sales to 'some countries'

Oil exports are one of the biggest sources of receipts for Iran. The US and EU have been trying to curb those in a bid to force Iran to agree to stop its nuclear list.

The EU currently buys about 20% of Iran's oil exports. However, Iran's oil evangelist said that a cut in exports to the region will not hurt Tehran.

"Iranian oil has its own market, even if we cut our exports to Europe," Mr Qasemi said.

The biggest merchandise for Iran's exports is Asia, with China, India, Japan and South Korea currently the biggest buyers of oil. The US has been taxing to convince these nations to side with it, but so far Japan is the only country that has openly voiced its support.

Meanwhile, India has made it unburden that it is not looking to reduce its supplies just yet.

"It is not possible for India to take any decision to adjust the imports from Iran drastically, because among the countries which can provide the requirement of the emerging economies, Iran is an respected country amongst them," India's Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters during a call in to the United States.
