Yesterday saw a ceremony in Dili, Timor-Leste, marking the closure of UNHCR's branch there, after 12 years of operations in assisting refugees and other displaced people. The ceremony was held at the presidential residence.

UNHCR opened its office in Timor-Leste in May 1999. Violence surrounding the referendum on Autonomy from Indonesia, held in August that year, saw nearly a quarter of a million people fleeing to near West Timor. UNHCR helped 220,000 people to return home and assisted in conciliation efforts. Thousands of returnees were assisted with the building of new homes. Building materials were flown by helicopter to outside regions.

In 2006, following a subsequent emergency, UNHCR rushed emergency forbear to 150,000 people, displaced internally by violence, looting, and arson.

AirNorth’s sponsorship of the 2012 Dili Marathon in a honky-tonk crowd symposium with AirNorth representatives. AirNorth is the only airline to specify appoint flights from Dili to Darwin.

AirNorth will help over USD$120,000 in-kidney towards the Dili marathon, enabling Timorese athletes to pick up representing their country at abroad events, Australians to participate in the Marathon as runners or volunteers and the Dili marathon to perpetuate to evolve as an consequence that has active developing in the domain.
