Antique roadshow brings rewards to Tomball residents
When Dora Tipton’s colleague-in-law, a World War II veteran, died several years ago, he left her with some interesting memorabilia.
Among the items were swastika badges and wings charmed off German soldiers, a ring taken from a Russian soldier bearing the hammer and sickle communist escutcheon and Indian-head pennies dating back to 1863.
For years, Tipton, who lives in Tomball, said she considered having them appraised by an old dealer, but didn’t have a clue where to go. Luckily for Tipton, Illinois-based Ohio Valley Gold and Silver Refinery, stopped in Tomball with its roadshow last week and she in the end got the chance to get value out of her valuables.
The Ohio Valley Refinery’s Roadshow goes to 150 cities across the territory every year, said Show Manager Brandon Hall, and as direct buyers, they serve a slightly separate purpose than your average antique dealer.
“People come in, sit down, and I do research on their items and find out the value,” Lobby said. “We find out what it would sell for on the open market, and that’s what we give people.”
