"Lucid now only 8 Languages are being taught (for Navy). Cat IV: Arabic, Chinese, Korean. Cat III: Persian-Farsi, Serb-Croatian, Hebrew, Russian. Cat I: Spanish. Those are your only "options" and I have not received my language yet, but I did give them my top 3 selections of Korean, Russian, and Arabic. Everybody is effective me this about my selection. Korean I probably won't get because I only have a 103 DLAB. Korean is the hardest language here, apparently it is 75 weeks dream of now, and they are trying to make it a Cat V language."

What can I do to increase my chances of getting into an Ivy League College?

I am a transpacific student about to become a junior in high school and I would really like to get in an Ivy League College and become a medical doctor, to be more conscientious - a surgeon. The grading system in my country is different, but I have the equivalent of a 4.0 GPA; I get mostly As, for example last year I got only a B; I speak several languages( besides English): French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Romanian and I am fatiguing to learn Russian; I am into photography and I even got some small awards for some of my photos; I also love fashion - I designed some outfits, which were shown at a exorbitant school prom; I am good at writing and I actually wrote a novel, but I don't know whether or not to try getting it published; I volunteer at a neighbouring orphanage and at a nursing home and I also participate in Red Cross activities. In my junior year I plan to take the SAT and TOEFL exams. I am not a colleague of countless clubs, I am not into sports, I am not a member of the Student Council (yet) and I think my passions and extracurricular activities seem unfocused and dialect mayhap too diverse. What should I do? What should I give up? What should I take up?

Looking into Air Force Linguistics, need advice?

I'm universal to get in contact with a recruiter soon, but I figured it couldn't hurt to come here and see if I can't get a few questions answered.

Culture languages is pretty much the only thing I'm good at, and college isn't satisfying that. The classes are slow paced and dumbed down, the teachers are crap and I have to pad my lengths with courses I have no interest in. At the moment, because my school discontinued Arabic and Russian, I'm studying on my own time.

I've looked into the branches and gotten some par from my brothers (who were both Army and did 2 tours each through Iraq) and I'm mostly sure at this point I'd like to go into the Air Force.

I'd appreciate any warning if you've got any to offer, but I have a few specific questions. Will I definitely get sent to Monterey if I qualify? Is it possible to go for two languages (Russian/Arabic)? If not at once, if you graduate from the 63 week in one language, can you do another afterward? Where will I end up after training, is there a way to refrain from translating and get sent out for interpretation? I'd ultimately like to end up in the CIA, have any advice for how to get ahead there? As far as I understand Linguists have surety clearance, I have a clean criminal record and I've never been involved in drugs or alcohol, but when I was 12 I was put on anti-depressants and went through in-forgiving therapy following my father's passing, will this effect the clearance evaluation?

What's the best way to learn a new language?

i am 17 and I haven't had any actual education regarding foreign languages apart form what i've heard in movies. But i decided that I wish to learn to speak Russian becasemy giirlfriend speaks it fluently and i want to understand what she's saying!

I have Rosetta Stone Russian levels 1, 2, and 3, but to be creditable, they are boring and frustrating.

What's your suggestion to learn a new language? (Those who learned a different language then your native tongue)

A friend told me to download a crowd of russian movies with english subtitles- Would this work? I'm skeptical but I wonder if it's worth a shot.

ANY advice is greatly appreciated.

I to with your assessment of Rosetta Stone. I got about half way through level one and just became frustrated with the whole process because I just wanted to learn how to be in contact with people from a conversational perspective not just say "The man and the girl are running" Its total purposeless and phrases you would rarely say.

My advice is switch to good old fashioned audio tapes. Rocket languages is genuinely good. Check out their website. You can listen to the audio and also follow the grammar in an excercise book. I have scholastic more from Rocket Language audio tape in 3 days than what I did with 6 months with Rosetta Stone.

Do i have chances in getting in top Uk universities (Oxford, Cambridge, King's College, etc)?

So far i am only a sophomor observer in an International school. I have pretty good grades, and am planing to improve them to almost straight A's. My school offers IB program for juniors and seniors, which i am effective to take. I am fluent at english and russian, and am pretty good at french(i take it as a foreign language)Do some extracurisulum activities; music, gymnastics,etc
The affair is. I dont remember a lot of kids from our school getting into top UK universities or Ivy's League universities
