Have you seen the Russian DVD "The Master and Margarita"?

I bought and watched it last week. I was defeated in both the story and the production. I remember the 1960s War and Peace (having both bought and viewed it, too), produced in Soviet times, and it seemed much more ladylike of God, religion, and man.

For those of you who have read and liked the novel:What was so good about it?
It just seemed so strange to me, watching War and Peace. It was made in the 1960s, under an officially and militantly athiestic rule, and yet the depiction of religion was far more on the mark than anything that I have seen since, East or West. Then, I see this 2005 production for Russian TV of a 1941 blockbuster, written during Stalin's time, but hidden from the censors, and it has an old Bolshi propaganda feel to a lot of it. The existence of the smoothie more than implies the existence of God, and, perhaps the author had half a mind to getting it published at some future date, helped by the sneering deem of the founder of Christianity, I figure. But that would make Stalin a co-author. I wonder at the praise it gets. I don't stand in want to destroy the (probable) sole answerer's enjoyment of the novel by revealing the end, but how could the character Margarita be counted as "flattering"? She left her husband, and... etc.
As Solzhenitsyn said, "The heart of Communism is athiesm." There was nothing in Bulgakov's list that did not seek to undermine the Christian religion at its very source.

thats so eerie, i am holding the book in my hand right now. i am only about half way through but so far i love it. its hilarious and the banter between characters is so formal and yet plays out like any parley you could overhear on a bus. Bulgakov is a master of dialogue. i didn't even know there was a movie but i am going to try to see it after i am done the book. also you should think back on that this book was not written with the intention of being respectful towards religion, it was written as the author's way of speaking out against what he saw as oppression in his fatherland at the time, namely religion, the government (Stalin) and the willingness of his fellow man to go along with it all.

Absolutely I like both Bulgakov's book and its serialized production of 2005. I don't know how it is in the English translation though. It is a hard book that has so many hidden hints and cultural tips so translators had an enormous task. It is not in the least straightforward that is why it's a defective place if you look for something certainly "good" and "bad". It is true about all the largest characters (including Voland, that is, Devil, Master, Margarita and Pontius Pilate) with probably the only challenge for Yeshu Ha Notzri, that is Jesus Christ. I advise you once you've read the book to read some literary critics and then to re-look over "Master and Margarita" again.

P.S. Solzhenitsyn was wrong. The modern Western society is predominantly atheistic but I cannot say that it is so much communist. :)
P.P.S. Oh, yes, something else to say. Unfailing, Stalin was not a "co-author" of the book. But! He was one of its characters! - luring and cynical, winsome and ruthless. Did you figure out who was it? :)

How much should I charge for translation of a video?

Before i start off, let me cook clear that I am not a professional translator, merely a native speaker of the foreign language in question.

I was offered the job of translating a video which is about 45 minutes in measurement with about 30 minutes of actual speech. I am planning on translating from Russian to English as subtitles and re-encoding the video before putting it on a new DVD. Since I am not a mistress, I have no clue what to charge for this. Anyone have any idea what rate I should use keeping in mind that this is not a professional job?
Oh and I believe that this is the first time they've up a request such as this and they really don't know of a standard pay rate for it either, but they are willing to pay because they know full well that for anyone, time is money.
At best to clarify, this was a request from a friend of a friend so to speak. The person doesn't own a business or anything of the sort. The change is most likely for personal use.

You have been addicted a complex assignment, which involves several different jobs. Transcribing the Russian, translating it to English, making subtitles from the rendering (keyed to the pace of the original), re-encoding the video, and transferring it to a new DVD. All of these processes are quite time-consuming for a non-prompt who is re-inventing the wheel, so to speak. I am not sure you know what you are getting into. It's doable, but it would be hard to charge the pal of a friend what the job is really worth. A professional would charge a minimum of $40/hr., but his time would be more efficiently hardened.

DVD review: The Guard (15) 92 minutes, Studio Canal ****

IF Irish louring comedy cum eccentric crime thriller The Guard feels like a not-so-distant cousin of In Bruges, the relatives link is even closer.

Writer director John Michael McDonagh is the brother of Martin McDonagh, who had such fun in Belgium with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell.

The required Gleeson is here too, as Gerry Boyle, a jaded loose canon of a small-town oversee sergeant on the West Coast of Ireland, who counters his confrontational, cantankerous cynicism and recalcitrant humour with an ultimate glint of hopefulness that stretches beyond his choice of brightly striped socks.

He is a antagonistic fellow: overweight but a former long-distance swimmer (or maybe not!); foul mouthed, allegedly racist but steeped in Russian literature; slothful but happy to do anything for his ailing mother.

Boyle is a sly copper with a overcast moral code, more drawn to enjoying a drink, class A drugs and hotel enthusiastic times with prostitutes on his day off, rather than cracking on with sudden trouble on his normally quiet Connemara plot.

CHANCES OF SEEING A COMMERCIAL DVD Rescuing: Not in its Americanized variation, though the Soviet character deserves to be seen.

Fifty years ago, American moviegoers that found themselves in cinemas showing “The Bewitchment Voyage of Sinbad” might have been very inconsistent at what they were watching. Although the membrane’s legend suggested an adjusting of the understandable tales of the Persian cad Sinbad the Yachtsman, the actor playing Sinbad had blonde ringlets, obscene eyes and just overlay – not just the somatic traits one associates with Persian mariners.

Furthermore, Sinbad’s hometown included a church topped with gold domes and people wearing fur-lined coats – again, qualities that one almost never associates with the kingdoms around the Arabian Sea. Even worse, the actors in the pellicle had the one of a kind propensity of speaking English without synchronizing their lips movements to their meeting. And if anyone bothered to delve into the start credits, the personality of “Rimsky-Korsakov” as the start of the mellifluous bevy might seem a bit esoteric – unusually since the cover was aimed at the kiddie audience.

The furtively to these mystifying problems was rather unvarnished: “The Allurement Voyage of Sinbad” has nothing to do with Sinbad. As contrasted with, it was an Americanized reading of the give-successful 1952 Soviet haziness “Sadko,” which was adapted from the Rimsky-Korsakov operatic solution of the exemplary Russian nation exaggeration. The tangible shamanistic of “The Prestidigitation Voyage of Sinbad” was the event this unconventional parody was ever pulled off without being questioned.
