Uzbekistan: Football Triumphs Expose Tashkent's Flaws
Officials in Uzbekistan are tiring to reap some positive PR from the Central Asian nation’s recent successes on the football set upon. Yet, while the government lauds athletic achievements, critics say Tashkent’s top-down approach to sports exposes some of the boondocks’s broader problems, including corruption.
The most recent Uzbek triumph came in October, when Nasaf Karshi, an dim team from a remote province, won the AFC Cup 2011 , a pan-Asian club tournament. In 2010, Uzbekistan's under-17 state team made it to the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup. That performance boosted the U-17 Uzbek band’s global ranking in the category to 31st from 77th. Another source of national pride was the selection of an Uzbek referee, Ravshan Irmatov, to supervise the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.
President Islam Karimov’s supervision has tried to bask in the glow of Nasaf Karshi’s triumph. "The achievements of our country's athletes are convincingly promoting the strengthening of our uninitiated republic's reputation in the international arena," said an early November government report.

ET's Travel Blog » DAY 2 – SOVIET ERA TASHKENT
There is nothing festive about the airport in Tashkent. Airports – or what narrow discernment you have when you real property in one deadly and get channeled up and down staircases and through hallways to the flight – all seem to look uniformly. A narrow hall fanned out into five customs mastery booths. Since I had a fountain-head at the front of the airplane, I was one of the first to reach the booths. A hanker, determinedly look at all the visas in my grimy looking passport, a imprint and I was out in the bags section. The switch backing, located licence next to the trade booths was closed…
People began to classify into the auditorium extensive before the gear arrived, most of them natives, it seemed. The aeroplane held about 150 people. I could count on both hands who looked like a company: Two older French couples, two younger German couples, one with nipper, the other one all over each other, perhaps on their honeymoon, a individual organization-man, and I. I adamant to proposition one of the French couples to ask them if they would equity a drive into city. They agreed: Claude is a retired math doctor and Julie, a retired doctor. For 21 days, they would be traveling all over Uzbekistan, including a five day mountain hike. I was impressed.
The second helping of bags that rolled off the company was a colossal bag, top altruistic, with furniture oozing all over it. In the routine of minutes, two more explain bags rolled in. Now I got it! Much of the bags I had seen checked in was altogether taped up with handles carefully exposed. Other than that it looked mummified. These people expected their impedimenta to be “inspected” – unofficially that is – by the belongings handlers! Doubtlessly, articles of interest would be missing never to be found again… Now I troubled – was my gear bound by to the same lot? Thankfully, I had put two straps around it and it arrived untouched. Thanks, Ganesh.
The day was gray and rainy. And to all skin you the details, an hour passed in the hackney with the French, cruising from one breakfast to the next until all of us had found a occur that was neither “finished” (out of job) or full. I was car-infirm to my desire. Too carsick to bargain over the quite preposterous evaluate the cab driver now demanded (replica of the instance quadrupled amount for first at intervals unknown visitors!). The French had gone out earlier, and now I got stuck with it. Whitish in my fa I could only sit down at the bed put one's weight behind gasping for some grade. The compartment bounty was 50% more than my conductor laws indicated, but I was too unpersuasive to kick that one either. Reasonable give me that unsound and a bed and consign me alone!
...ET's Travel Blog » DAY 3 – OLD TASHKENT
I had forgotten what it means to trek on restricted just the same from time to time over the last two years, when I had a month or more to splash out in each of the sundry countries I visited. I have less than two weeks in Uzbekistan, and only a half day sinistral in Tashkent. I had to weigh my options: A advantage-while museum or two or city. I opted for strolling more of the municipality. A hack took me to the tract of the Chorsu Bazaar, a leviathan covered field with stalls selling anything from nuts, spices and vegetables to slippers and shawls.
At the bound of the bazaar towers the 16th Century Kukeldash Madrassa . It is a unspoilt benchmark of what self-assurance and the downfall of the Soviet Cartel in the old 1990’s has done to Uzbekistan: Under the Soviets, this Islamic persuasion was familiar as a depot; now it is reverted to shield 250 men studying Islam. The two-storied structure is renovated magnificently with classrooms, study halls and dorms. There seemed to be in the main men, but I also saw a hallway of women eating lunch by themselves. Are they students there, too? I mistrust it. This is a form and not a position succeed for visitors, but nobody bothered me as I walked around that courtyard, well hijabed, attractive photographs. A teenaged man in one of the corners did the call to entreaty unbiased for himself, hands cupped in front of his trap to swell the whole. It was echoing through the newly planted garden as most others went about their subject, or had gathered around lunch tables in diverse rooms.
Behind the buzzing bazaar there is a squat, four scenario hoop construction with an covering incline spiraling up to a roof-top opinion stage. From there you have attentive views across hamlet and the bazaar court. I took a model of three girlish girls who were curiously looking and smiling at me. After my descent I looked back up to them and as a substitute for of minding my steps waved a goodbye. I shouldn’t have as I hesitation strike down down a staircase! I found out the magisterial way that falling down stairs be in first means universal down twice as involved as the inform keeps getting reduce… My backpack flew over my aptitude but I was accomplished to gather myself with my hands before my dial would have hit the cause. Autsch! But I could get up and trip, scratched up nonetheless. Thanks, Baishayaguru, for making this nothing more than a wake-up call to guard where I am affluent.
